The wonderful photo below is other parts of modern round end tables post which is published by erick.
An end table is intended to make it easy for people sitting in an armchair to reach their drinks nibbles or books and newspapers without having to bend down over the side of their chair to do so. The same with a coffee table - it should be set at a comfortable height. Your first priority should therefore be the dimensions of your coffee and end tables. A coffee table should ideally be at just above knee height. Your end tables should be level with the arm of the chair or sofa. This will enable you to each to the side and pick up a drink with very little effort. Too high or too low and it is more easy to spill even to drop your cup or glass.
Another thing to factor in is the visual weight. If you purchase metal and glass tables for example they will not carry the same weight as a wood table. As such you can go with something that`s a bit larger or which makes a bigger statement. It will have the same impact on the room as a smaller wood table. If it has extensive use of glass such as having top and bottom shelves that are glass you can scale up even a bit more.
Somewhere along the line however everything became more complex. Some blame the conversation pit era; that crafty sofa that didn`t really have an end. Coffee tables were suddenly on their own placed in the center of the pit so visitors had a place to put their drinks while they well conversed.
