Floor lamps are sometimes used to represent or pay homage to regional pride as seen in Southwestern selections showcasing characteristic elements added to a lamp such as images of cacti and rattlesnakes. A New York City-themed floor lamp may showcase a silhouette of the Empire State Building. Cozy wilderness scenes of Colorado and other rustic locations may utilize the image of wild critters such as the grizzly bear or bald eagle.
You must first decide whether you would like a real antique floor lamp or just one produced to look like an antique. Real antique lamps are very rare and can cost thousands of dollars. Usually these antiques have some sort of historical importance and were used by an important person. On the other hand manufactured lamps are much cheaper and easier to get than real antique lamps and still provide that element of class to your room. It is more a personal decision on how much you are willing to spend and would you be okay just to have a manufactured lamp and not a real antique,
Another consideration will be how the lamp will be used. If you are choosing a floor lamp to add light to a corner where you will be doing a lot of reading an arched lamp would be a better investment for this purpose than a clamp lamp might be. Keep in mind that lighting can be used to create atmosphere as well as add light to darkened corner.
